Concurrent Real-Time delivers the computing foundation that energy engineers depend on for high-performance simulation, monitoring, and control. Built on our industry-proven RedHawk Linux real-time operating system and deployed on iHawk computing platforms, our solutions are engineered to meet the demands of dynamic, high-throughput, and safety-critical energy environments.

Our technologies are used across the full energy value chain from exploration and generation to distribution and research and are trusted by organizations managing the most complex and high-risk systems in the world.

Concurrent Real-Time provides purpose-built platforms for simulation, testing, and control in the energy sector. Our technology stack is designed to meet the performance, safety, and integration requirements of today’s rapidly evolving energy systems.

Concurrent systems are deployed globally in diverse energy applications, including:

  • Nuclear power plant control
  • Wind turbine testing and modeling
  • Gas turbine and generator control
  • Oil and gas exploration
  • Solar power production
  • Fuel and pipeline distribution
  • Plasma research and experimental energy systems

At the core of every system is RedHawk Linux, our real-time operating system delivering sub-5-microsecond response times on certified systems. Key benefits for energy applications include:

  • Real-time scheduling and shielding for critical control loops
  • Predictable interrupt handling for high-reliability operation
  • Scalability across multi-core, multi-node platforms

At the Clemson University Wind Turbine Drivetrain Testing Facility (WTDTF), Concurrent Real-Time technology plays a central role in enabling real-time simulation of wind turbine nacelles at full scale.

Highlights:

  • Concurrent’s RedHawk Linux and SIMulation Workbench (SimWB) power a real-time simulation lab that replicates dynamic nacelle behavior under electrical and mechanical loads.
  • The lab integrates SIMPACK and MATLAB/Simulink models running on a Concurrent real-time computer with EtherCAT and reflective memory I/O.
  • The test bench system includes a 2.9 GHz Xeon E5 machine that allows engineers to test wind turbine control strategies using hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation before deploying them to physical systems.
  • This approach increases test efficiency, improves safety, and allows repeatable testing of rare wind events an innovation crucial to next-generation renewable energy R&D.

This collaboration enables safer, more cost-effective, and more efficient testing of utility-scale wind turbines and is helping lead innovation in renewable energy infrastructure.

SimWB enables hardware-in-the-loop testing of control systems across a wide range of energy equipment, supporting real-time execution of models developed in:

  • Simulink®
  • SIMPACK
  • MATLAB®
  • C/C++ and Fortran

With its real-time database and I/O mapping tools, SimWB ensures deterministic interaction between models and real-world systems making it ideal for test labs, utilities, and OEMs.
